Meet the Artist
Julia Shaw is a self-taught mixed media artist and entrepreneur living in New York City. In 2016 she rekindled her childhood dream of becoming an artist when she began attending an intergenerational art class. Her interest in drawing and painting with acrylics on canvas’ evolved to include mixed-media artwork.
The 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic quarantine shutdown filled Julia with stress, anxiety, feelings of helplessness, and at times hopelessness. However, amid adversity, Julia was able to shift her mindset to focus on her artwork. The creative process became a very therapeutic and healing experience. Julia’s artwork expresses her cultural narrative which infuses the richness of her African and Native-American heritage with her current day Black-American female experiences.
Her artwork has been exhibited at Jamaica Center for Arts, Learning in a Social Justice Art Show, 20th Annual Southern Queens Park Association Art Exhibit, Harlem Fine Art Fair, 65th Annual Fulton Arts Fair, Environmental Justice Art Exhibit@ Queens College Library, The Feminine Agenda@ The Yard Columbus Circle, and the Rochdale Village Community Center.
Julia is co-founder of a book publishing company, Collaborative Experience, Inc. and co-author in several book collaborations, that allowed seventy-five writers to become published. Julia resides in Queens, NY and is the mother of two beautiful and smart daughters and three inspiring grandchildren.
